  • Elsevier, please get out of the arms trade

I'm unhappy that Elsevier is in the arms business, and I want them to get out. Therefore, I wrote the following letter to Elsevier's chairman:

    Mr. Jan Hommen
    Chairman, Reed Elsevier
    Reed Elsevier PLC
    1-3 Strand
    London WC2N 5JR
    UNITED KINGDOM

    Dear Mr. Hommen,

I was dismayed to learn that Reed Elsevier has been organizing arms fairs since 2003 through your subsidiary, Spearhead Exhibitions. I feel it is inappropriate and immoral for Elsevier to be in the business of promoting and facilitating the global weapons trade, which leads to war, suffering and death around the world.

I know Elsevier through your high-energy physics journals Nuclear Physics B, Physics Letters B, and Physics Reports. Though I have published in two of these journals before, I can't in good conscience submit papers to them any more while knowing you run arms fairs. Will you please stop? Spearhead Exhibitions can't be that big a part of your business; why not sell it off and reclaim the moral high ground?

    Sincerely,
    Heather Logan
