Physics Co-operative Education at Carleton University

The Department of Physics at Carleton University has introduced two new Co-operative education programs. The first is a B.Sc. Honours in Physics Co-op program and the second is an M.Sc. stream in "The Physics in Modern Technology", which includes a four month work term with an industrial partner.

M.Sc. Co-operative Education Program

Physics in Modern Technology

Students can concentrate their studies in computational physics or instrumentation, areas of expertise at Carleton University. In addition, as part of the Ottawa Carleton Institute of Physics, students may decide to emphasize semiconductor physics at the University of Ottawa. The normal requirements will consist of six one semester courses and a work term with a written report and an oral presentation. Most incoming students would normally take our two Computational Physics courses. Depending on the student’s specialization they would take additional courses in subjects ranging from imaging and instrumentation to semiconductor physics. A student enrolling in this Masters program would normally be expected to complete the degree in a twelve month period.

Supervision of Students

Although students will not be doing research under the supervision of a faculty member, each student will have a faculty advisor to provide guidance in course selection, work term job applications, and the writing and evaluation of the work term report. Work term projects will be vetted to ensure that they are suitable. The progress of the student will be monitored during the course of the work term. A report will be submitted that must receive a `Satisfactory' grade for the student to graduate. The student will also present an oral report to the departmental faculty which must receive a `Satisfactory' grade.
