Common Unix Commands and Utilities

This is a partial list of some of the unix commands and applications available. Type man topic_name on the command line for more information. Many of commands/applicatons listed below are found in /local/bin, and /local/X11/bin. Be sure these are in your path.

  • emacs - Recommended text editor
  • firefox - web browser
  • pine - command line mail client
  • soffice - Open Office : word processor, spreadsheet package, can read, edit and create DOC, XLS and PPT files
  • lpr - Print command (to default printer)
  • lp - Print command
  • pico - Simple text editor
  • g77 - Fortran compiler
  • g++ - GNU Project c++ compiler
  • gcc - GNU Project c compiler
  • perl - ext,file,number manipulator and programming lanuage
  • xv - gif, tif, jpeg viewer
  • gv, ghostview - Postscript Display Tools
  • gzip - File compression utility
  • dvips - Convert TeX .dvi files to postscript
  • psf - An ascii to Postscript filter to customize print output
  • psnup - A tool to print multiple PostScript pages on a single physical page
  • ps2ascii - Converts PostScript files ASCII
  • ps2epsi - Converts PostScript files to Encapsulated PostScript
  • tex/latex - Prepare documents for publication
  • xdvi - View TeX .dvi files
  • xfig - Object based drawing tool
  • spell - Spell checker
  • xmaple - Maple : advanced mathematics and computer algebra software package
